Mobile money at checkout: MTN MoMo and Orange Money
Accept MTN MoMo and Orange Money at the till, record the transaction reference for your books, and mix cash with mobile money in a single sale.
Mobile money is how a large share of customers in Cameroon pay, and CEMAC POS handles MTN Mobile Money and Orange Money as first-class payment methods at the till. You can take a payment entirely by mobile money, or split it — part cash, part MoMo — when a customer does not have the full amount on one channel.
How it works
When you take payment you pick the method for each portion of the amount due. Choosing MTN MoMo or Orange Money lets you record the transaction reference the customer receives from their operator, so the mobile money payment is traceable in your records and reconciles against your operator statement. CEMAC POS does not move the money itself — the customer completes the transfer on their phone as usual — but it captures the reference and the amount against the sale so your books stay accurate.
- Accept MTN Mobile Money and Orange Money as distinct methods
- Record the operator transaction reference for each mobile money payment
- Split a single sale across cash and mobile money
- Everything is recorded in CFA francs against the immutable sale
Taking a mixed payment step by step
- At the Pay screen, review the total amount due in CFA francs.
- Choose the first payment method — for example cash — and enter the amount the customer pays that way.
- Add a second payment line and choose MTN MoMo or Orange Money for the remaining balance.
- Ask the customer to complete the transfer on their phone to your merchant number.
- Enter the transaction reference from the confirmation SMS into the reference field.
- Check that the two payment lines together equal the total due — the balance should read zero.
- Confirm the payment. The sale records both methods and their references.
- Print or send the receipt showing the split payment.
Always capture the transaction reference before confirming. It is your proof the mobile money transfer arrived and it is what you match against your MTN or Orange statement at reconciliation.
Common errors and how to fix them
| Message / symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Balance still shows an amount due after entering payment | The payment lines do not add up to the total | Adjust the amounts so cash plus mobile money equals the total due |
| Cannot confirm without a reference | The transaction reference field is empty | Enter the reference from the operator confirmation SMS before confirming |
| Customer says the transfer failed | The mobile money transaction did not complete on their side | Wait for the confirmation SMS before recording it, or take another method |
| Wrong operator selected | Orange Money chosen for an MTN transfer, or vice versa | Remove the payment line and re-add it with the correct operator |
| Reference entered but numbers do not reconcile later | A typo in the captured reference or amount | Compare the recorded reference against the operator statement and correct the sale note |
Common questions
Does CEMAC POS transfer the money automatically?
No. The customer completes the MTN MoMo or Orange Money transfer on their own phone. The till records the reference and amount so the payment is traceable in your books.
Can a customer pay part cash and part MoMo?
Yes. You add multiple payment lines in one sale and split the amount across cash and mobile money until the balance reaches zero.
Why should I record the transaction reference?
The reference is your proof the transfer arrived and lets you reconcile each mobile money payment against your MTN or Orange operator statement.
